Christmas celebration and customs
Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are celebrated on December 24 and 25.
It is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, the son of God in Bethlehem. He was born on December 25 in a poor stable, where the Virgin Mary and Joseph arrived after a long journey. That stable was his first home where he began his life on earth surrounded by the humblest.
The representation of the manger of the birth of the baby Jesus was established by Saint Francis of Assisi around 1226, who built a straw little cottage and called the local people to be part of the manger. This Christian idea spread very quickly throughout the world, then clay figures began to be used, instead of the representation of the living manger, still in force when it is possible to do so.
Christmas carols: popular songs that are sung in front of the manger.
In the streets you can find groups of children singing carols with drums and tambourines, while the people who pass by give them some monetary help or non-perishable food.
The Rooster Mass: it has its name since it takes place after the crowing of the Rooster, at 12:00 pm. on the night of December 24. The birth of Jesus is commemorated.
Decorations: pine cones, lanterns, pine branches, mistletoe wreaths.
Santa Claus: his history dates back to the 4th century, since then it has been a symbol of generosity and love towards all the children of the planet.
Christmas Tree: In the Christian religion it also represents the birth of Jesus. The decorations with lights symbolize the light of Christ, and the star at the top, the star of Bethlehem. This tradition dates back to the 7th century.
Christmas cards: were first conceived in 1843, when Henry Cole asked an artist to draw a Christmas celebration for him to add a few written lines of good wishes and sign them. He sent them to print and distributed the cards among his family and friends. Everyone was very grateful for this.
Merry Christmas to all!
